LICENSES
KRN Licenses
Kōwhai Ridge Network uses different licences for different parts of the project. This allows the firmware, hardware, documentation, and branding to each be licensed in the way that best suits their intended use.
The licences below will apply to the separate project components upon public release.
Firmware (AGPL-3.0-only)
The KRN firmware is licensed under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0. You are free to study, modify, and redistribute the firmware under the terms of the licence. If you distribute modified versions, or make them available as part of a networked service, the corresponding source code must also be made available under the same licence.
Printed circuit boards (CERN-OHL-S-2.0)
PCB designs are licensed under the CERN Open Hardware Licence Version 2 – Strongly Reciprocal. You are welcome to manufacture, modify, and redistribute the hardware designs, provided that any distributed modifications are also released under the same licence. This helps ensure improvements to the hardware remain available to the community.
Enclosures and mechanical designs (CERN-OHL-P-2.0)
Mechanical designs, including 3D printable enclosures and CAD models, are licensed under the CERN Open Hardware Licence Version 2 – Permissive. These files may be used, modified, and incorporated into other projects with minimal restrictions, while preserving attribution and the licence terms.
Documentation (CC-BY-4.0)
Documentation, specifications, and other written content, including material published within the KPSAG Archive, are licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International. You are free to copy, share, adapt, and build upon the documentation for any purpose, including commercial use, provided appropriate credit is given.
Branding and project identity
The Kōwhai Ridge name, KRN branding, product names, project logos, word marks, and associated visual identity are not licensed for general reuse under the project's open-source licences.
This does not prevent you from manufacturing unmodified KRN hardware designs for personal use, development, testing, or evaluation, including where KRN branding or artwork forms part of the published PCB design or fabrication files.
Permission to manufacture the hardware does not grant permission to use KRN branding to market, distribute, or represent modified or third-party products as official KRN products or as endorsed by Kōwhai Ridge.
Certain supporting artwork, compatibility marks, conformance badges, and similar materials may be released under separate licences where explicitly indicated.
